FMF: Aphex Twin @ Further 1994, WI

Drop Bass Network - Skull Logo

“This is very rare, digitized version of Aphex Twin’s set at Furthur from 1994. The promoters of the party did not record this…” A million thanks to Master Of Puppies for the upload and Demix for the tip!

So where the fuck do we begin with this one? We could start with an abridged history of the legendary Drop Bass Network out of Milwaukee, WI. Although, if we went that route it would surely require a book deal just to do it justice, nevermind the countless recollections of the many party-goers in Milwaukee alone. Fuck it. What is widely understood is that DBN is (overall) largely forgotten. Local and federal laws changed as time went on and the multi-day ragers out in the middle of Somewhere, WI became harder and harder to pull off. When the parties dried up, so did the releases, and when the releases dried up, so did the funding and oddly enough, it seems as though every one of the thousands who attended the parties fell off the face of the earth. For the record, the article in the July 1994 issue of Request Magazine put it best when it states, “The Milwaukee scene is an amalgam of hippie sensibilities (“peace, love, unity and respect”), punk spirit (“do it yourself”), and heavy-metal attitude (“f—king hardcore”)”.

While it is criminal to see such an amazing movement disappear, it is admittedly fascinating to see random audio/video clips surface from past events….and just yesterday this gem surfaced over at Soundcloud:

Please, think about this: 1994. WI. Aphex Twin. DBN. Yeah, this is not happening again.

Also related is this Youtube (do we really need to link this again?) of an early Daft Punk playing Even Further in 1996:

For good measure, a few links for even further knowledge (sorry, pun)

Not necessarily DBN related, but a screencap taken from an early Milwaukee punk news segment in 1988:

IT’S EITHER THE END OF THE WORLD OR THE BEGINNING. AND IT’S ALL GOING DOWN IN MILWAUKEE.

“Further” took place in ’94. “Even Further” took place in ’96. I was at Even Further.

Shit, you are absolutely correct. That will show us for not fact checking.
